This afternoon I somehow managed to lock myself out of my loaned Ford Contour with the key in the ignition. When the locksmith came and busted open the car with ease (using the same method I had been using but with a more solid metal rod) he made an interesting comment regarding the my dad’s X3, which was also in the driveway. He basically said that the newer BMW SUVs and some Range Rovers are the only mainstream vehicles that can’t easily be accessed by a locksmith, and that as such if we had called about the BMW we would have been turned down. He didn’t really specify why, but it’s nice to know that even if the badge-snob decriers are right about our car being the same as a Hyundai Tuscon in every other way, it is better at keeping the thieves out.

Well yeah but that’s anything. Nothing short of a heavily armored car comes close to their proof.

Can Ford unlock the car with a satellite or something, or is that only GM? Also, at some point you should be able to unlock the car with your phone and a code.

Fun fact! The X3 also protects the water pump from being stolen replaced.

Back in the day you could unlock and start a Ford using nothing more than a screwdriver.

Fun fact, My car won’t let me lock my keys in my car. the doors won’t lock if the fob is detected w/in the car and if the doors are locked and I close my trunk with the keys in it, it will automatically pop back open.

Same with the Bimmer. Mine just won’t let you lock it if the key is in the ignition.

GM lets you unlock the doors yourself from the OnStar app on a phone. Remote start from the phone too. But if the battery is dead, you’re pretty much screwed. Hope you know where the emergency key slot is hidden, and you have the emergency key with you!

Last summer, at a campground I was staying at, I watched a locksmith spend hours trying to break into a Range Rover. He was forced to pack it in when the sun went down. That was the saddest looking tradesman I’d ever seen. Fortunately the family had another car, because they had to make a 300 mile round trip to the nearest dealer to have another key made.

That’s exactly what the guy said. If you have a Range Rover or BMW, your best option is to make another key.

Funnily enough, we actually had an extra key made at the BMW dealer when we bought our car. Care to guess the price?

Close but a bit more. It’s a push-start remote key, it doesn’t go in the ignition.

If it’s anything less than $300, I’ll be stunned.

Oh wow, that’s the same price as it was for a new key on my ‘04 GTO.
